Ever Ridden a Kayak in 2-Foot Seas?

I know one guy who has--did it last night, as a matter of fact. And since he made it back safely, he has this to say about the adventure: "When there's a small craft advisory, it applies to kayaks!"

Not having had enough of the striper action at the HRBT, Ron went back from 6 to 9:30 p.m. for another round. When he launched at 6 o'clock, "the conditions were pretty good," he assured me. By 8:30, though, they had worsened, and by 9 o'clock, said Ron, "the seas were running a solid 2 feet from the west, and the wind had really picked up."

Nevertheless, he stayed put and worked his way through 23 striped bass that were too small to keep. He didn't even measure most, but a couple were at the 18- and 19-inch mark. He was going to call it quits due to the increasing sea state but decided to hold out a bit longer.

Number 24 (pictured at right) came in at 23 inches, followed by two more shorts, and then he called it a night.

"The trip back with seas from the west hitting on the starboard was a rocky ride," said Ron. "However, I never felt like I was going to turtle--it just wasn't pleasant.

"Will sleep well tonight," he concluded.
