It Sometimes Helps To Set Personal Goals

Ron did just that this year; he set out to catch 500 bass. And yesterday evening, he scored numbers 500 and 501. They weighed in at 2-14 and 3-3. Both fell for the Whopper Plopper.

Like me, Ron can't get enough of the topwater bite. In describing the moments leading up to his catching the 3-3 (pictured above) yesterday, he said, "I was working the shoreline when, about 75 yards off shore--in the middle of nowhere--there was a big blowup. I quickly heaved a cast near that spot, and Wham! water flew everywhere as the fish hit."

Ron went on to say he keeps throwing the WP, even though he knows it's that time of year to switch to jerkbaits and crankbaits. His philosophy is to stay with the WP as long as it's producing. "When I don't get a strike in an hour or so," he clarified, "I will re-tie," but not until then.

The two bass is not all that Ron caught yesterday. He also scored two crappie, measuring 11 and 12 inches, respectively. They both succumbed to a dangling Road Runner. Rounding out the day's tally was a 21-inch chain pickerel, which went for the XTS Minnow.

With the falling river gauge, Ron was tempted to head to Milldam this evening but instead opted for Lake Smith, a spot he hadn't been to since this past spring. As it turned out, he's happy he went where he did.

While trolling a dangling Road Runner and XTS Minnow for crappie, he was throwing the Whopper Plopper near lily pads, corners and structure. He was making parallel casts alongside some of those lily pads in a cove when an amazing blowup suddenly occurred. Moments later, he boated a "fatty" (in his own words) 5-lb. 5-oz. bass (see photo above) on the WP.

Before calling it quits at 6 p.m., Ron also had recorded a 1-6 and dink bass, as well as a decent crappie (see photo at left).

"I think Smith was a good call," he said before adding that "it was a bit chilly and VERY windy" this evening.
