Leaving Virginia on a High Note

"It is almost impossible to watch a sunset and not dream." --Bern Williams

This gorgeous sunset photo was taken at the end of a fishing day yesterday on West Neck Creek by Rob Powell, who explained that this trip probably would end up being one of the last, if not his last one, on Virginia waters. It seems Rob is headed south to continue his Navy career, and I, for one, wish him nothing but "fair winds and following seas."

Rob's email to me this morning noted that he got out around 11:30 yesterday, "after giving the wind forecast time to prove itself right or wrong," to borrow his words. "It couldn't have been more right, or a more beautiful day," he added.

You may recall from a previous post on my blog that Rob has taken a fancy to the 4.5-inch pumpkin-punisher colored Roboworm, so it should come as no surprise that's what he was armed with when he hit West Neck yesterday. The bait worked just as it had before, producing five of the eight keepers he boated.

Among those five keepers was this bass, which tipped the scales at 2-5.

Another of those five keepers was this beauty--his best of the day--that weighed in at 4-6. Rob caught both of these fish within 200 yards of the mouth of the marina, on the east bank.

Two of the remaining keepers were tantalized into hitting a 3/8-oz. chartreuse-white, double-willow spinnerbait. The final keeper fell for a Timber Tiger crankbait in a shad pattern.

For the benefit of those who may not remember, Rob fished a tournament or two this season with Jim Bauer before he got his own rig running. And Rob was telling me in his email today that he may have finally weaned Jim away from those brown-orange Slider worms he has fished for so many years. It seems that, based on Rob's success with these pumpkin-punisher Roboworms, Jim has used them a couple of times now with good results. He admitted to Rob the other day that he "might have to retire the old Slider worms."

In closing out today's email to me, Rob indicated there's a chance we might see him holding down the back seat on Jim's Skeeter a time or two yet this next year. He said there's also a chance he'll get in a few more licks at West Neck next Saturday--it all depends on what the weather is like. "If it's nice, I'll be out," he assured me.
