An 8-Year-Old Steals the Show Today

If there's one thing I've learned about bass tournaments over the years, it's to believe in Yogi Berra's saying: "It ain't over 'till it's over." And that certainly was the case in today's tournament at West Neck Marina.

Eight-year-old Grayson Kinzel and his dad, Mark, were the last two anglers to come around the corner of the marina store today to weigh their fish. And it would be a fair statement to say that young Grayson "put a whoopin'" on the other 11 anglers who showed up for today's second event in the 2013-14 Goody series. The bass he's holding here tipped the scales at 2.61 lbs.

How happy was he? If you can't tell from the look on this young man's face, then you have a problem.

Finishing in 2nd place, which also was a money spot today, was Brian Skeens, whose big fish here weighed in at 2.48  lbs.

The other competitors finished as follows:
     * 3rd place, Mark Kinzel, 2.26 lbs.
     * 4th place, John Harmon, 2.08 lbs.
     * 5th place (tie), Steve Bailey and Mike Burgess, 1.80 lbs.
     * 7th place, Dave Martins, 1.67 lbs.
     * 8th place, Jason Fittro, 1.47 lbs.

These anglers didn't weigh a fish: Eddie Sapp, Kevin Love, Patrick Cunningham, and James Baker.

The grand finale at today's event came when tournament director, John Goodman, presented the first-place winnings to young Grayson.

My hat's off to all the anglers who showed up to fish today's tournament. They faced strong north winds and falling water all day--tough conditions for anyone.

The Goody's Big Bass Tournaments take a breather next weekend but resume action with back-to-back Sunday tournaments out of West Neck Marina on Nov. 17 and 24. Succeeding tournaments on the 2013-14 schedule are slated to launch out of Bob's Fishing Hole.
