As reported by John Goodman, today's tournament, the first of the season, was a resounding success. A total of 21 men and women anglers participated, but only 7 brought fish to the scales. Those anglers included Eddie Sapp, 1st place, 1.88 lbs.; Mike Miller, 2nd place, 1.61 lbs.; Josh Clarke, 3rd place, 1.55 lbs.; Paul Celentano, 4th place, 1.47 lbs.; Ronnie McLaughlin, 5th place, 1.34 lbs.; Tyler McNair, 6th place, 1.28 lbs.; and Henry Boyd, 7th place, 1.20 lbs.
Not weighing fish today were John Goodman, Brian Skeens, Chris Fretard, Jim Sumrell, Cathy Brandt, Rex Shell, Kitt McNair, Michelle Sawyer, Robert Stamey, Dave Hales, Steve Bailey, Mark Foster, Sid Ryan, and Roger Armentrout. Most admitted they were skunked, but some reported catching the inevitable "short fish" or two.
Not only was it a great day on the water, but everyone was treated to a water-safety demonstration by Sid Ryan. He fell overboard at the ramp, and after a good soaking, returned to the weigh-in, along with his superb sense of humor. It was nice to know Sid was all right.
The second tournament of the season will take place at Bob's Fishing Hole on Dec. 15, from 7:30 to 2.
The $10-per-angler entry fee seemed to be appreciated by all the anglers. Today's payout consisted of $126 for first place and $63 for second. The remaining $21 was held over, to be paid to the angler catching the biggest fish of the season after the final tournament on March 2.
Epilog: I just learned in a follow-up email from John that one of today's contestants, a gent who usually finishes in the money, actually brought his fish to the scales in--now make sure you get this--a sandwich bag, of all things. What a great picture that would have made!
