My long-time friend, Jim B., recently shared this photo of his great-grandson, who will turn 12 years old in October.
Seems that great-granddad got the idea to get him a rod/reel combo as an early birthday gift so he could use it this year before the weather turns cold. You see, he and his dad often are out in the woods hunting once winter arrives.
The boy already had purchased a Lew's rod/reel combo with money he saved from gifts. He was a bit short but got some help from his uncle in exchange for a promise to keep his grandma's grass cut this summer.
Great-granddad didn't know the young man already had a baitcaster until he was about to pull the trigger on one. The boy's dad said he could handle it, though, as great-granddad quickly learned once he saw the combo he purchased in the young man's hands.
In testament of his newly acquired skills, the young boy and his dad made a trip one morning to a neighborhood pond. They only stayed about an hour because both were just getting over a case of stomach crud, and, too, it was hot. The fruits of their efforts are visible in the accompanying photo. Who caught the bigger bass is still a mystery, but it really doesn't matter in the long run.
What's important is that this young man now has two good combos of his very own, with which he can go get the big 'uns...or at least have fun trying. Moreover, he's learning something that can serve him well for the rest of his life.
