They Say Numbers Don't Lie...

So let's take a look at some that may help explain why weekend warriors occasionally may feel a bit sore or tired after an eight-hour bass tournament. Let's start with this example:

If you make 3 casts per minute:
You'll make 180 casts in an hour
And 1,440 casts in 8 hours.
If you catch 5 keeper fish in those 8 hours,
You will average 1 fish every 288 casts.

Now let's look at the aggregate results from 9 different one-day pro tournaments held several years ago on the following impoundments: Pickwick Lake, Lake Wheeler, Lake Eufala, Grand Lake, Percy Priest Lake, Guntersville Lake, Sam Rayburn, Toledo Bend Reservoir, and Lake DeGray.

A total of 1,037 anglers competed.
They caught a total of 1,843 fish.
There were a total of 172 limits out of a possible 1,037.
An estimated 1,244,400 casts were made,
Based on an average of 2.5 casts per minute.
The fish-to-angler ratio was 1.78 to 1.
The overall catch-to-cast ratio for all anglers
Amounted to 1 fish for every 675 casts.

Even if you were to slow down the above 2.5 casts-per-minute average to only 1 cast per minute, these competitors would have made 497,760 total casts, for a catch-to-cast ratio of 1 fish per every 270 casts.

One fella who looked at these numbers said, "Wow! I just realized how bad I am at fishing." As he explained, "I often spend 8 hours on the water, making, at best, 50 casts an hour, or 400 for the day, without getting a single fish. I think I'd better go back to golf."
