For the 2nd Time in As Many Weeks, A Day of Big Numbers

Anytime we have 12 boats and 20 anglers who bring 56 bass, including 10 limits, to the scales, you know we had a good day. Those 56 bass weighed a grand total of 146.72 lbs., with a 2.62-lb. average weight.

Here are the anglers who went home with a money envelope in their possession:

1st Place: The team of (from left) Eddie Sapp and Stan Krason had a limit weighing 23.87 lbs., anchored by the beauty in Eddie's right hand, a 6.48-pounder. Their total weight set a new all-time record for the second week in a row.

2nd place: The team of (from left) Al Napier and Chris Napier had a limit weighing 21.45 lbs., anchored by an even-bigger beauty that tipped the scales at 7.38 lbs...good enough to also lay claim to the big-fish pot.

3rd place: Eric Killian had a limit weighing 15.81 lbs. after a 0.25 penalty for one dead fish. His big fish checked in at 3.89 lbs.

And yours truly came away as the day's mystery-weight winner. My 5.91 lbs. for three bass was closest to the 3.95 weight that was drawn. I didn't have a big fish.

Here is how everyone else finished the competition:

     * The team of Chris and Nate Fretard, five fish, 13.46 lbs. total weight, 3.58-lb. big bass.
     * Red Bruun, five fish, 11.67 lbs. total weight, 4.12-lb. big bass.
     * The team of Rob Peppers and Dave Anderson, five fish, 11.57 lbs. total weight, no big fish.
     * The team of Mike Speedy (visiting from Ohio) and Stephen Hardwick, five fish, 11.34 lbs. total weight, 2.82-lb. big bass.
     * The team of Bobby Moore and Steve Bailey, five fish, 10.67 lbs. total weight, 2.65-lb. big bass.
     * Jim Wilder, five fish, 8.23 lbs. total weight, no big fish.
     * The team of Skip Schaible and Chris Vitovich, three fish, 6.61 lbs. total weight, 3.57-lb. big bass.
     * The team of Gary Coderre and Lenny Hall, five fish, 6.13 lbs. total weight, 2.02-lb. big bass.

Congrats to all of the winners, and thanks to everyone who came out to participate. I also would like to thank Gene and his son, Jr., who helped me with various tourney-related matters today. I can't tell you how much I appreciated your assistance in making sure everything went smoothly.

For planning purposes, our next scheduled event is Saturday, May 12, from safe light (around 5:45 or 6 a.m.) to weigh-in at 2 o'clock. Hope you can join us.

One Last Cast

This is the time of year when I truly enjoy weighing all those bags of big, beautiful bass. As I told a couple of participants, however, I may have to start working out if everyone keeps bringing bags in excess of 20 pounds to the scales.

'Twas nice having Mike Speedy and Stephen Hardwick fishing with us again today. This duo is all set to spend a week chasing bass down in Carolina Country. Here's wishing both of them much luck on their vacation.

Looks like my comment in an earlier report about a Halloween lure has sparked a little interest among a couple of the anglers. Had one of them today hand me some cash to buy him a few of the lures for his own use. He even was trying to buy 'em directly out of my box for a while. Used this lure today to catch all but one of the seven fish (only three keepers) I put in the boat. Not the first time that has happened, either. I only hope the manufacturer eventually comes out with a 3/8-oz. model, so I can wing it a little better with a baitcaster.
