Fishing for Our Troops

That's the title of a national program created in 2017 and aimed at bringing veterans and active-duty military families together to make an impact on their lives through fishing.

Honchoing this program's local efforts, which, incidentally, is the inaugural FFOT event, are Bass Nation Director Sid Ryan and Region 7 TBF Director Wayne Hayes. Specifically, they're looking for volunteer boat owners willing to help them make the Friday, June 1, 2018, event at Munden Point Park a success.

On that date, the boat owners should plan to arrive at Munden Point about 9 a.m. They will be asked to take a maximum of two active-duty members fishing for 2 hours, starting at 10 a.m. They then will return to the ramp for lunch and take a second group out for two hours. The only other requirement for volunteers is to plan on providing the tackle (rod, reel and baits) for the participants they will host.

All active-duty participants are being signed up through the USO and very well may include some wounded warriors.

Project manager for this event is Bill Sorrentino, vice president of business development at Leebcor Services, LLC, a federal contractor, whose guiding mission is to help build a stronger military by providing world-class construction services throughout the United States. Co-founder and CEO, John Karafa, a service-disabled veteran and an avid fisherman, wanted to establish a strategic program of sustained support to enhance the USO's mission of connecting with the military and their families.

Any boat owner who would like to participate should call Sid Ryan at 757-287-5650, or email him at sidryan@cox.net. He's also your point of contact for any questions you may have.
