Early on, today's tourney looked like it might have a soggy beginning for the 13 anglers in nine boats, but the skies were beginning to clear when we shoved off from the boat basin, and they stayed that way throughout the day. Claiming the first-place prize today was the team of Bob Glass and Randy Conkle, with five fish weighing 10.92 lbs. Second place went to Chris Napier, with a bag of five fish weighing 10.04 lbs. The tourney's lunker pot went to the team of Lenny Hall and Gary Coderre, with a bass weighing 2.99 lbs. Other participants who weighed big fish were the team of Bob Glass and Randy Conkle, with a 2.78-lb. bass; Chris Napier, with a 2.49-lb. bass; the team of Eddie Sapp and Paul Celentano, with a 2.36 lb. bass; and the team of Bobbie Moore and J. P. Twohig, with a 2.12-lb. bass.

Other Results

Here's how all the other participants finished in total weight: the team of Lenny Hall and Gary Coderre, five fish, 9.96 lbs.; the team of Eddie Sapp and Paul Celentano, five fish, 9.88 lbs.; the team of Bobbie Moore and J. P. Twohig, three fish, 5.20 lbs.; and Al Lemieux, two fish, 2.20 lbs. Anglers Joe McDevitt, Skip Schaible and Ken Testorff all reported catching a few fish today but chose not to bring them to the scales for weigh-in.

Those 10 anglers who participated in the weigh-in accounted for a total of 25 bass weighing a grand total of 48.20 lbs.

Seven participants now have qualified to fish our season-ending two-day Classic on Oct. 13-14 by virtue of having fished four tourneys. Those seven include Gary Coderre, Eddie Sapp, Paul Celentano, Bob Glass, J. P. Twohig, Skip Schaible, and Ken Testorff.

It’s clear that Steve Bailey remembered how he won the Dewey Mullins Tribute Bass Tourney on April 14, because he repeated that success on April 21. His latest numbers were five fish, with a total weight of 13.55 lbs. Coming in second was the team of Al and Chris Napier, also with five fish and a total weight of 13.22 lbs. Capturing the day’s lunker pot was Bob Glass, with a bass that tipped the scales at 4.17 lbs. The only other participants in the 14-angler (10-boat) field who weighed big fish were Steve Bailey, with a 3.52-lb. bass; the team of Al and Chris Napier, with a 3.49-lb. bass; and Jim Bauer, with a 3.34-lb. bass.

Here’s how all the other participants finished in total weight: the team of Bob Glass and J. P. Twohig, five fish, 11.69 lbs.; the team of Eddie Sapp and Paul Celentano, five fish, 8.92 lbs.; the team of John Matyiko and Mark Cable, four fish, 5.55 lbs.; Jim Bauer, two fish, 5.51 lbs.; Gary Coderre, four fish, 4.92 lbs.; and Skip Schaible, three fish, 3.59 lbs. Angler Joe McDevitt said he caught three keepers but chose not to weigh them, and yours truly ended the day without ever hooking up with a fish. I told a couple friends before we started that I thought I was going to have a bad day, and I wasn’t wrong.

Those 12 anglers who weighed fish had a total of 33 bass, for a combined weight of 66.95 lbs.

With this posting, 10 anglers are only one tournament shy of qualifying to fish our annual, two-day Classic tourney scheduled for Oct. 13-14 this year. Those anglers include: Gary Coderre, Steve Bailey, Eddie Sapp, Paul Celentano, Bob Glass, Jim Bauer, J. P. Twohig, Al Napier, Skip Schaible, and yours truly. I will update this listing throughout the remainder of the season.

We reached another new high today, with 25 anglers in 16 boats taking part in our second tourney of 2012. Winner of the day’s 1st place prize was Steve Bailey, with a total weight of 13.77 lbs. The second-place prize went to Rob Peppers with a total weight of 13.63 lbs.; he also had big fish at 4.56 lbs., taking the lead away from Al Lemieux for seasonal lunker award. Al had a 4. 55-lb. bass, after the dead-fish penalty was applied, during the first week’s competition. Rounding out the list of winners was the team of Bob Glass and Randy Conkle, who claimed third place. All prize winners weighed five-fish limits.

Participating but choosing not to weigh their fish were Joe McDevitt, Wayne Hayes, Skip Schiable, the team of John Matyiko and Mark Cable, and the team of Al Lemieux and Noah Alford. Of these fishermen, there were four more five-fish limits.

The 18 anglers who weighed their fish accounted for a combined total of 43 bass crossing the scales, with a combined total weight of 85.92 lbs.

"Please accept my thanks for making our 2012 season-opener one to remember, despite the soggy conditions. With 13 boats and 20 anglers participating, we old-timers agree that today’s event represented a new high. None of us can recall another occasion when we had enough people to pay three places, as we did today. Claiming first place was the team of Al Lemieux and J. P. Twohig, with a total weight of 14.55 lbs. They also had big fish at 4.55 lbs., which included a 4-ounce dead-fish penalty. Second place went to the team of Gary Coderre and Larry Hall, with a total weight of 11.87 lbs. Third place went to Al Napier, with a total weight of 11.76 lbs. The other competitors finished as follows: Ken Testorff/11.12 lbs., Steve Bailey/10.38 lbs., the team of Bob Glass and Randy Conkle/9.59 lbs., Steve Albertson/9.14 lbs., the team of Ed Estes and Dylan Taylor/6.20 lbs., the team of Eddie Sapp and Paul Celentano/5.69 lbs., the team of Jim Bauer and Rob Powell/4.94 lbs., Skip Schiable/4.46 lbs., the team of Kristopher Hammond and Alec Wommack/3.31 lbs. (including a 4-ounce dead-fish penalty), and Wayne Hayes, who didn’t weigh his fish but reportedly had about 7 lbs.

Other Results
Those 19 anglers who weighed their fish accounted for a combined total of 52 bass crossing the scales, with a combined total weight of 103.01 lbs. Besides the 4.55-lb. big bass weighed today, there were 5 bass in excess of 3 lbs. weighed in, along with two more that weighed almost 3 lbs.

Senkos and jigs seemed to figure prominently in a lot of today’s catches. Some anglers, however, reported catching their fish on various topwaters."
