First Trip Since Last Halloween

With such a long dry spell, Jerry was more than ready to hit the water today. Because of the reports of muddy water at West Neck, he decided to try the Northwest.

Unfortunately, conditions at his starting spot weren't any better than what he had been hearing about West Neck. "The water wasn't only muddy; it was filthy," he said. "The creek's surface had scum and debris in the area I wanted to fish."

Jerry explained that he only fished about 30 minutes there, during which time he didn't get a single hit. He subsequently motored to another spot in the main river, where he also found muddy water but without all the floating junk.

As a result, he came up with the 13-inch bass in this picture. It fell for a chartreuse spinnerbait at the mouth of another creek. Said Jerry, "The water was so dingy that my chartreuse spinnerbait was no longer visible at about 12 inches deep."

Jerry spent a total of about three hours casting and moving around to find clearer water, but none appeared to be had, so he called it quits. "Just glad I didn't start off 2014 with a skunk," he noted.

The water temp when Jerry started his day was 59, and it got up to 63 at one point before he wrapped things up.

In a follow-up email, Jerry told me that, unlike most of his trips, he took time to flush his outboard when he got home today after seeing all that dirty water. Certainly can understand that decision. Incidentally, here's hoping the next trip is more memorable, my friend. Keep chunkin' and windin'.
